Beim Stichwort New York kommen einem viele Dinge in den Sinn – Broadway, Times Square, Nachtleben. Aber Rennrad fahren? Insofern war ich so erstaunt wie skeptisch, als ich erstmals von den Plänen hörte, italienische Rennradkultur in den Big Apple zu importieren und hier einen Gran Fondo zu starten. Meine Skepsis legt sich, als ich am klaren Frühlingsmorgen des 8. Mai mit 1.873 anderen Startern auf der zur Hälfte gesperrten George Washington Bridge hoch über dem Hudson River stehe. Uns bietet sich ein grandioser Ausblick über die Skyline von Manhattan.

More than 2,000 cyclists took part in the inaugural Gran Fondo New York road race — a 100-mile course that started in New York City and climbed to Bear Mountain Park, with racers ending back in New Jersey's Palisades Interstate Park. Participants ride north on 9W in Alpine Sunday. Local cyclists said Sunday's race was the equivalent of the New York Marathon for the biking world, except the race was open to anyone, regardless of experience or qualifications. The winner, however, would qualify for the Union Cycliste Internationale Amateur World Championship.

Clayton Barrows, 29 anni, un passato come professionista per i team Agisko Dart e Rik Aid, ha ottenuto il tempo migliore affrontando le salite cro- nometrate del Colle della Punta Rocciosa (1,3 km), del Passo del Daino (1,6 km con strappi al 14%) e di Bear Mountain (6 km con impennate al 10%) che hanno definito il tempo finale.

This Sunday, Rockland will partly be home to the first ever Gran Fondo New York, a roughly 100-mile bicycle race that starts on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, goes to Bear Mountain and back. The race starts at 7 a.m., with riders expected to start making their arrival in Rockland at around 8 via Route 9W.

In Italia sono ormai diventate una tradizione. Ma per New York si tratta di una novita assoluta. Domenica 8 maggio si svolgera la prima Gran Fondo cittadina, cioe una manifestazione basta sulla distanza (come se fosse una maratona, ma in bicicletta) e vi parteciperano due ex professionisti di fama mondiale, Gilberto Simoni e Claudio Chiappucci, vincitore di due Giro d'Italia il primo (2001 e 2003) e tre volte sul podio del Tour de France il secondo.
